I’ve been spending a lot of time in my garden these last few weeks. Mostly getting things ready to start planting at the end of May. Since we live at a higher elevation, our gardens can’t really be tended to until mid to late May when the risk of frost goes down (and by frost I mean 3-feet of snow).
While I’m itching to start growing, to create a garden that will be my sanctuary and wow my family, I also know that this time is precious. It’s the time of planning, organizing, and preparing the beds. This time is critical. To have a successful garden I need to map out where things will go so they get the right amount of light. I test the soil to ensure that it has the nutrients my plants will need.
I sit in the grass, pick dandelions for the dandelion wine I’ve always wanted to make, and I dream about what this space could look like. We’ve lived here for 2 years now and it’s amazing how far its come, and yet, it still has so much to go. A fact we could say about most things in life.
The Crab Apple trees to the far South of the yard are covered in pink blossoms that make the place feel more magical and heighten my senses that what’s in my head, can become a reality. I just have to go with the flow of nature. To plan, plant, nurture, harvest, and rest. The rhythmic cycle of our planet but one that we often forget for ourselves and our dreams (especially the part about rest).
This fall, I have some pretty big launches taking place within my own business. Three launches to be exact. Most of these dreams I planted years and years ago but let go dormant while I tended to myself to become a better gardener. Now, they’ve been planted and I’m here nurturing them. Then, this fall, like all falls, I’ll get to harvest. Sharing the fruits of my labor with everyone around me.
While we all like to fantasize about the harvest, the day we get to complete a project, or share what we’ve been working on. Most of life is spent in the other phases–planing, planting, and nurturing. Some things take more nourishment than others. Wherever you are in this process, know that the next step is coming. The harvest will arrive. But the attention you put into the phases before the harvest, will decide on how bountiful that harvest will be.
So be here now.
Enjoy the time of planning. Dreaming up new ideas. Drawing them in your sketchbook, journaling about them, or discussing them with friends. Take this time to really lay out what you want and be clear in your vision. The clearer you are on the garden you want to grow, the easier it will be to know if you’re on the right path as you get closer and closer to your harvest.
